September 8th

ANNOUNCEMENTS

* Upcoming assessments are highlighted green and appear in ALL CAPS.
* Homework assignments are highlighted yellow and appear in ALL CAPS.
* Suggested questions to ask your fifth grader are highlighted light blue. The suggested questions are meant to cement the day’s learning.
* This blog will be posted by 4:30 p.m. EST on the days when school is in session.

MATH

* Ask your child if you’re not sure which of the four math classes he is part of. A CFP is a Check for Progress.

READING WORKSHOP
* While there is no At-Home Reading Log in grade five, nightly reading of just-right, student-selected text is essential.

Barber: “Readers learn from experience.  Student shopping and guest reader.”

Brazier: “Readers learn from their best and worst reading times.”

Kornas: Reading log handed out to record in-class reading time.  Independent reading.

Martinez: Tour of library.  All students shopped for books.

WRITING WORKSHOP

Barber: “Writers write what they know well.”

Brazier: “Writers appreciate vivid images.”
*ASK: What for you was a “vivid image” in the story Mr. B read today during writing?”

Kornas: “My Map Book”
*HOMEWORK: FINISH THE DRAFT OF YOUR MAP IN YOUR W.W.N.B. (Do not work on final draft at home please.)

Martinez: “Writers write about things they know well.”

*HOMEWORK: MATERIALS TO DECORATE THE WRITER’S NOTEBOOK. DUE FRIDAY,
