Monday September 30th

MATH
Barber- Adding & subtracting decimals.  CFP1-2 Retake on Tuesday. 

Brazier- “Math Olympiad:” A series of challenging math problems, solved in teams. CFP #3 re-take on Wednesday. Strand 1 Test on Thursday.

Kornas- Adding & subtracting decimals.

Chapter 2 Criteria was outlined for students and group expectations explained.  Students began the planning process.  Students will have Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to complete this.  Next Monday we will begin presentations.


BARBER’S WRITING WORKSHOP:”Writers use concrete words and phrases” Choosing the topic we want to write about for PN.

BRAZIER’S WRITING WORKSHOP: Work Day: Continue writing/refining a personal narrative or two. CHECKPOINT: All students should have at least two personal narrative story drafts completed in the writer’s notebook.   

KORNAS’ WRITING WORKSHOP: Writing about their weekend.

We wrapped up Chapter 2 on the First American Indians.  Next week we will begin planning out how to ‘show’ what we learned in Chapter 2. All classes will work in groups to do this.

BARBER’S WRITING WORKSHOP:Free Write Friday.  A time to work on collaborations in our writing and experiment with new genres.  Partnerships.

BRAZIER’S WRITING WORKSHOP: “Writers revise as they work.”  
HOMEWORK: TAKE YOUR “PATIENT” (writer’s notebook) HOME AND PERFORM “PAPER SURGERY” (make corrections and revisions to an existing piece of writing).

KORNAS’ WRITING WORKSHOP: None W.W. today - Instead we cleaned out desks, organized planner binder and finished up “unfinished” projects.

  • CFP (TEST) TOMORROW over rounding decimals, writing big numbers with decimals in standard, written and expanded form - refer to notes and CFP #2 practice sheet.  I had an answer key to the paractice sheets sitting outside my room on the table ifor students to use if they want to check their work tonight to help them prepare.

* I can read and write 15-digit numbers.

* I can write numbers of up to 15 digits in expanded notation.
Example: 24,678 = 20,000 + 4,000 + 600 + 70 +8

* I can also write decimals using expanded notation (a.k.a. expanded form)
Example: 24.365 = 20 + 4 + 3 X (1/10) + 6 X (1/100) + 5 X (1/1000)

We looked at the ways the American Indians adapted to the four environments in North America. We applied our knowledge to creating a short summary on Ch 2.4.  Ask your child about why they migrated to North American and what are important natural resources needed for adapting.

BARBER’S WRITING WORKSHOP:”Writers use organizers to plan their writing” Personal Narratives. Students looked for the time in their story were they learned a lesson. Began drafting their PN.
