May 4th

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • The May meeting of the BLE PTA is tonight at 7:00.

  • The 5th Grade Music Performance will take place tomorrow evening (arrive by 6:40 p.m.).

  • Field Trip Permission Slips are due on Friday (05/08/15).

WORD STUDY

Barber:  New weekly words: whether, weather, wear, where, were
* SPELLING TEST THURSDAY

Brazier: The importance of self-talk when solving analogies. Strategies for solving multiple-choice analogy questions.
* SPELLING TEST ON FRIDAY (the 25 words should appear in your fifth grader’s planner)

Kornas: Focus on your introduction for your oral presentation of your WordMaster word.  Be creative! Use props, costume items, etc to make your presentation memorable and interesting.
* STUDENT PRESENTATIONS WILL BEGIN ON WEDNESDAY.  PRESENTATIONS SHOULD BE WELL-REHEARSED AND PROPS BROUGHT TO SCHOOL.
ASK: “Can I see your presentation?”

Martinez: Practicing parts of speech and dictionary skills.
* HOMEWORK: PARTS OF SPEECH PACKET.  DUE TOMORROW.

MATH


Brazier - Switch One: Over- and underestimating.  
* HOMEWORK: PAGES 11-14, 28-30 and 34-47
* CFP TOMORROW

Brazier - Switch Two: Subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Finding the least common multiple (LCM).
* STRAND 7 TEST ON THURSDAY

Martinez - Switch One: Adding and Subtracting fractions.

Martinez - Switch Two: Finding equivalent fractions using dot paper.

SCIENCE
Barber: Vocabulary & friction reading. Introduce Activity 8 Great Race.

Kornas - Switch 1:  Complete activity 8 - Rolling On. New vocabulary: potential energy, gravitational potential energy and kinetic energy.

Kornas - Switch 2: Complete activity 8, then test acceleration at top of ramp vs. acceleration at bottom of ramp.  Where does the car roll faster?


READING WORKSHOP
Barber: Independent reading.  Running records.

Brazier: “Readers pick up on an author’s message (or two).”
* ASK: “Name an author’s message in “Lights! Camera! Action!” What makes you say that? Support your answer with multiple pieces of textual evidence.”

Kornas:  Instructional Read Aloud - The Cay - finished the book .  Read and analyze a non-fiction book with reading partner.  What do you notice?

Martinez: No Reading due to music practice.

WRITING WORKSHOP

Barber:  “Writers write what they know a lot about.”

Brazier: ‘Writing in the Air.’

Kornas: No writing today.

Martinez: “Informational writers write in the air about their topic.”
* HOMEWORK: TYPED OPINION ESSAYS ARE DUE WEDNESDAY.  STUDENTS SHOULD USE THEIR CHECKLIST AS THEY MAKE THEIR FINAL CHANGES.
