May 5th

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • The 5th Grade Music Performance will take place tonight (arrive by 6:40 p.m.).

  • Field Trip Permission Slips are due on Friday (05/08/15). There is a purple form and also a yellow one.

  • ¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

WORD STUDY

Barber:  New weekly words: whether, weather, wear, where, were
* SPELLING TEST THURSDAY

Brazier: Word Masters Analogy Pre-test. Spelling Games.
* SPELLING TEST ON FRIDAY (the 25 words should appear in your fifth grader’s planner)

Kornas: Focus on your introduction for your oral presentation of your WordMaster word.  Be creative! Use props, costume items, etc to make your presentation memorable and interesting.
* STUDENT PRESENTATIONS WILL BEGIN ON WEDNESDAY.  PRESENTATIONS SHOULD BE WELL-REHEARSED AND PROPS BROUGHT TO SCHOOL.
ASK: “Can I see your presentation?”

Martinez: Wrapping up dictionary skills.
MATH


Brazier - Switch One: Strand 8 CFP #1. Exploring the use of fractions as operators (e.g. 23of 640 acres).
* HOMEWORK: PAGES 26-27 (30-38)

Brazier - Switch Two: Reducing Fractions. Finding the Great Common Factor (GCF).
* STRAND 7 TEST ON THURSDAY

Martinez - Switch One: Adding and Subtracting fractions.

Martinez - Switch Two: Finding equivalent fractions using dot paper.

SCIENCE
Barber: Activity 8 Great Race:  using ramps to determine average speed.

Kornas:  Activity 10: Come-Back Can
ASK: At what point did you observe kinetic energy in the Come-Back Can? (When it was in motion/rolling.) When did you observe potential energy? (After the can rolled forward and then came to a stop before it started rolling back.) What specific kind of potential energy did you observe? (elastic potential energy.)


READING WORKSHOP
Barber: Independent reading.  Running records.

Brazier: DRA Nonfiction Summary-writing Strategy: Write the summary in chunks, using the headings as guides.

Kornas:  Comparing non-fiction text features in books with reading partner.  Independent Reading.

Martinez: Independent Reading.  Running records.

WRITING WORKSHOP

Barber:  “Writers remember the 3 T’s.”

Brazier: ‘Writing in the Air.’ Introduction to Informational Writing.

Kornas: Poetry freewrite.

Martinez: “Informational writers write in the air about their topic.”
* HOMEWORK: TYPED OPINION ESSAYS ARE DUE TOMORROW.  STUDENTS SHOULD USE THEIR CHECKLIST AS THEY MAKE THEIR FINAL CHANGES.  STUDENTS SHOULD EMAIL ME THEIR ESSAY IF THEY WANT ME TO PRINT IT.
