SOCIAL STUDIES

See your fifth grader’s planner for a link to the textbook.

Kornas Switch 1 and 2: Passed back chapter 1 test and went over the correct answers.  Went over chapter 2 vocabulary and shared examples.  Read Time for Kids.

Barber: Return chapter 1 test.  Read and discuss chapter 2.1 and begin vocabulary work.

READING WORKSHOP
Barber: Partnership work.  Students take a stop & jot to share with their partners.

Brazier: “Texts teach readers new words.”
* ASK: “What’s a word you came across in your reading today whose meaning you weren’t sure of? Do you have a theory about its meaning?”

Kornas: “Readers step inside and outside of the story to build theories about characters.”

Martinez:  Getting re-acquainted with reading partners.  Reading partner interviews.  Formal reading assessments continue.

WRITING WORKSHOP

Barber: Writers learn about their partners.  Interview our new writing partners.  

Brazier: “Writers draw upon strategies they already know for generating personal narratives.”
* ASK: “What’s a personal narrative? What strategies do you know of for generating one?” (BONUS QUESTION: “Why are some personal narratives more “significant” than others?”)

Kornas: “Writers create a mental movie to remember details of a special person or place.”

Martinez: Freewrite Monday.

* HOMEWORK: PUBLISHED PIECE.  DUE TOMORROW.  BRING A BEVERAGE.
