Barber Switch 1 and 2: Students read 3.2 & 3.3, then complete the organizer for the two regions covered.
Kornas Switch 1 and 2: I.N.B. pg. 16-17. You child became an expert on one section of chapter three. All sections of three sections of the chapter for homework tonight need to be read, even though they were only an expert on one section.
*HOMEWORK: READ SECTIONS 3.3-3.5.
READING WORKSHOP
There is no At-Home Reading Log in grade five; however, nightly reading of just-right, student-selected text is essential.
Barber: Complete the class read aloud: Freak the Mighty ( a few tears fell).
Brazier: “Readers check their understanding by occasionally summarizing what they’ve read.”
Kornas: “Readers notice patterns in their jots about characters.”
Martinez: “Readers step inside and outside of the story to build theories about characters.”
WRITING WORKSHOP
The expectations for our students as writers have never been higher.
Barber: Writing with transition words.
Brazier: “Writers employ power verbs.”
*HOMEWORK: TAKE HOME YOUR WRITER’S NOTEBOOK. FINISH THE ENTRY YOU WERE WORKING ON TODAY. Make sure that, by tomorrow, you have at least two complete (beginning-middle-end) personal narratives in your notebook.
*ASK: What was the strongest verb you used today in your writing?”
Kornas: “Writers write in paragraphs.”
Martinez: “Writers generate entries for significant personal narratives by thinking of strong emotions.”
